A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, April 15, 2016 at Faith Baptist Church, 2728 Marks Creek Rd., Knightdale, NC 27545, where he was a member of twenty-two years. Pastor Mick Bowen will be officiating. A graveside service will follow at 5:00 pm, Friday, April 15, 2016 at Western Prong Baptist Church, 167 Peacock Rd., Whiteville, NC 28472. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, April 14, 2016, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at L. Harold Poole Funeral Home, 944 Old Knight Rd., Knightdale, NC 27545.

Jerry was born September 20, 1944 in Whiteville, NC to Alton and Clyde Strickland Edwards. He graduated from Whiteville High School in 1962 where he was the President of the 4-H Club and a member of Future Farmers of America. Upon graduation he attended Kings Business College in Raleigh. In July of 1965 he married the former Judy Faye Morris of Middlesex, NC.

Jerry had a tremendous love and dedication to his country and joined the United States Army in 1967 until 1973. He was a graduate of the U.S. Army Airborne School, as a paratrooper, in Fort Benning, GA and the U.S. Army Quartermaster School in Fort Lee, VA. As an infantryman, he was stationed at Fort Bragg, where he earned the Sharpshooter designation. Early in his business career, Jerry was employed by D&L Appliance Parts Company as Branch Manager for the Raleigh area for more than ten years. In the late 1970s Jerry obtained his NC Real Estate license and purchased his first three rental properties. In 1983, he joined Allstate Insurance Company as an Exclusive Agency Principal/Owner in Raleigh. During his twenty-two year career, numerous times Jerry achieved Honor Ring, Allstate’s highest achievement for agency growth. He also received the LUTC designation as a graduate of the Life Underwriting Training Council. As a spirited salesman and entrepreneur, Jerry enjoyed the freedom and opportunity provided by his insurance agency. The business allowed him to do what he cherished most, which included spending time with his family, building close personal friendships with his clients, and helping them protect what mattered most. Jerry sold his Allstate Insurance agency in 2004 and retired for a short time. In 2010 he founded Jerry Edwards Insurance Agency, Inc. (JEI), an independent insurance broker representing more than thirty insurance carriers. Jerry was known in business for his honesty, integrity, and sincere love for his customers.

Jerry had a passion for classic automobiles. He was very fond of Corvettes and especially enjoyed his red 1962 Chevrolet Impala convertible (also he and Judy’s high school graduation year), which he entered in a number of car shows winning first place in the Twelfth Annual Vintage Chevrolet Show in September 1990. Jerry enjoyed music of all kinds, but especially from the 1950s and 1960s era as well as Carolina beach music. He was known for a focus on physical fitness, having been a member of a number of area gyms since the early 1970s. He was an avid dancer, enjoying shagging, the cha-cha, the waltz, and the east coast swing, among many others. He loved watching his sons play baseball and football at Wilders Grove, where he was the league Commissioner in 1991. He cherished his time with his family as members of Southhall Swim & Racquet Club for many years. Those who knew him well understood Jerry’s unique passion for the NC State Fair. It was not uncommon for him to attend the Fair multiple times during “Fair Week”. He shared this affinity with his two sons, Chris and Kelly, as the three attended the State Fair together 40 of the last 41 years.

Above all, Jerry loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a bold believer and loved sharing the Gospel with others. He would often provide encouraging devotions to his staff and made sure the office lobby always had a Bible on hand and other devotional materials for his customers. One couldn’t be in his presence long before Jerry would ask them to join him at church. He believed in the importance of Christian education, sending his sons to Christian school beginning in kindergarten. He was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church in Raleigh (1976-1993) and Faith Baptist Church in Knightdale (1994-2016). He often served as usher at Friendship Baptist and was a member of the Chair Detail Team at Faith Baptist. He believed both roles were integral to the church’s worship service and would often joke, “It’s hard to have church if you don’t have a place to sit.” Jerry adored his church, his Sunday school class and his Pastor Mick Bowen. His legacy will live on as a Father and friend who proudly displayed his love for God and others.

Jerry is survived by his twin sons, Christopher Dale Edwards and his wife English (grandson Tyler) of Raleigh, NC, Kelly Graham Edwards and his wife Allison (granddaughter Kaitlyn) of Raleigh, NC, his special friend Priscilla Summerlin of Raleigh, NC; and sister Mary Elizabeth Smith of Clayton, NC, brother Roscoe Edwards (wife Mary) of Whiteville, NC, sister Peggy Shackelford (husband Chuck) of Wauchula, FL, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Alton and Clyde Edwards, brother Rueben Edwards, brother Bill Edwards and sister Margie Turnage.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Faith Baptist Church in Knightdale, NC and Transitions Life Care-Hospice of Wake County.
