Anchorage Daily News January 17, 2003

Surrounded by family members, NORMAN RICHARD BUCY died Jan. 15, 2003, at Providence Alaska Medical Center of complications related to cancer. A memorial service was at St. Benedict's Catholic Church with a rosary.

Born Sept. 15, 1921, in Seattle to Francis and Ida Bucy, he was the youngest of eight children. He graduated from Queen Anne High School in Seattle in 1939. Mr. Bucy came to Juneau in 1941 with the Army Signal Corps. There he met and married his wife of 53 years, Colleen V. Hellan, in 1943. Together they raised nine children. While in the Signal Corps, he served in Attu, King Salmon, Seattle, Barrow and Fairbanks, where he retired from the Army in 1964. He worked for RCA in Fairbanks before moving to Anchorage in 1974. He then worked for Pacific Fruit and Produce in Anchorage from 1976 until retiring in 1986. His family wrote: ''Norm enjoyed skiing, tennis, dancing, fishing, hunting, golf, cards, and crosswords. He loved spending time at the family gold mine and with his best friend, his black lab, Cinderella. Through his life he shared his love for sports and the outdoors with his children and grandchildren. In the words of one grandson, 'He has a special twinkle in his eye.' Many remarked on his ability to convey his spirit with a single wink. He was an active member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, attending daily Mass for many years. He will be missed for his kind, humorous, and gentle spirit.''

Mr. Bucy is survived by his brother, John Hawkins of Port Townsend, Wash.; sisters, Violet Trulin and Daisy Brown of Aberdeen, Wash.; children and their spouses, Rik and Donna Bucy of Soldotna, Kathy and John Trautner of Girdwood, Bobby and Ron Buesing of Denver, Jan Bucy Of Seattle, Barbra and Robert Howard of Palmer, Gary and Roxanne Bucy of Anchorage, Ken Bucy of Anchorage, Michael Bucy and Marta Lastufka of Juneau, Kristin Shindle and Bill Blydenburgh of Anchorage; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to Catholic Social Services or the American Lung Association.
