William Thomas “W.T.” Halford, 87, died Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at the V.A. Hospital in Jackson. Visitation is 8-10 a.m. today at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Forest. Memorial services are 11 a.m. at Forest United Methodist Church.

W.T. is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Bebe) Chadwick Halford and their six children: Barbara Louviere and husband Carl of Ocean Springs, Tom Halford and wife, Jan of Madison, Bitsey Buegel of Ridgeland, Chad Hill and husband Bill of Columbus, Jim Halford and wife Collette of Chattanooga, Tenn., Frances Hellen and husband, Bruce of Bedford, N.H. They have 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. W.T. is also survived by two brothers and one sister, Gene Halford of Magnolia, Buck Halford of Canton and Ann Goolsby of Brandon.

W.T. was born in Yazoo County on July 28, 1916. In 1940, W.T. joined the U.S. Marines. On May 6, 1942, Japanese forces captured the island of Corregidor and W.T. was held as a P.O.W. for over 40 months. W.T. received the Bronze Star for his outstanding service to the U.S.A.

W.T. was an active member of the community where he coached numerous Little League teams, served as Scoutmaster, and participated in a variety of civic organizations, including the American Legion, which he served as president. In 1979, the Boy Scouts of America presented W.T. with the Silver Beaver Award, their highest leadership honor, for his 25 years of dedicated service. W.T. was very involved in his local church. He taught Sunday School for over 30 years, was active in the prison and bus ministries, the United Methodist Men, and multiple church committees. In 2002, W.T. received the United Methodist Church’s “John Wesley Fellow Award” for his sustained legacy of devotion to God and his local church....
