Jose “Pepe” M. Salas, 90, a resident of Bayard, NM entered eternal rest Saturday, April 9, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born April 18, 1925 in Santa Rita, NM to Jose and Juanita Muñoz Salas. Mr. Salas graduated from Hurley High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Core in August of 1943. On his first mission Sgt. Salas, a Tail Gunner B-24 was shot down during WWII over Lintz, Austria. He was taken POW by the Germans for 9 1/2 months. He received the Purple Heart, Victory Medal and EAME Theater Medal with one Service Star. After he was liberated he returned to his hometown, Santa Rita, NM. He married his sweetheart, Consuelo Valerio in 1955. He worked at Kennecott Copper Mines. He then became the Veteran’s Service Officer for the surrounding areas. He retired from the Veteran’s Service Commission in the early 1990’s. He then enjoyed playing golf, going to casinos and playing cards with his family; but most of all he loved going to church. He was a loving man of great faith with a loving relationship with Our Lord. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Consuelo “Chelo” V. Salas of the family home; three daughters, Lucy Arellano and husband Gary of Bayard; Priscilla Laurent and husband John of Gallup; Dora Summy and husband Scott of Gallup; eleven grandchildren, Brenda, Sammy, Randy, Jocelyn, Monica, Kristin, Kari, Melyssa, Bryan, Steven and Dylan; sixteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Esther French; sister-in-laws, Lorenza (Lencha) Salas and Beatrice Valerio; brother-in-law, Luis Morales; special compas, Juan Alaniz, Deacon David and Virginia Castañon. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Eusebio, Manuel and Felix Salas; four sisters, Marta Rojas, Genevieve Salas, Lilia Garcia and Alice; grandson, John Joseph Laurent. Visitation will be Sunday, April 17 from 3-4pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with the prayer vigil and holy rosary to begin at 4pm with Deacon David Castanon reciting. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, April 18 at 11:30am at Infant Jesus Shrine with Father Tony Basso officiating. Concluding service interment will follow with full military honors at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sam and Randy Arellano, Bryan, Steven and Dylan Summy, Benjamin Salas, Robert “Bobby” Salas, Donald Washington and Jerry Salas. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and special friends Barry and Katherine Nam.
