Ruben Garcia,83, of King City passed away Sunday, April 10, 2016 after a long battle with diabetes. He was surrounded by his wife and children at home. Ruben was born in Laredo, Texas on July 20, 1932.

He served in the U.S Army and was stationed in San Francisco as a Radar Specialist. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, he attended Laredo Junior College and Texas A&M University. He worked as a Life Insurance Manager in Laredo, Texas for 10 years and an Auto Salesman in Salinas and King City for 23 years.

In 1969, Ruben served as the American Legion Post Commander in Laredo, Texas and in King City in 1990. In 1991, he served on the Executive Board of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Monterey County. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Lions Club in Greenfield and King City. He was President of the Guadalupana Society and also served in numerous committees including the King City Planning Commission.

Ruben will be remembered as being respectful to everyone he met, from all walks of life. He took pleasure in meeting people and remembering their first name. Even in his last years of life, Ruben always remembered to mail birthday cards, Christmas cards or thank you cards to his dear friends and family. Everyone who knew Ruben loved him. He was an extraordinarily good friend to all.

He is survived by his wife Maria Elena Garcia; they were married two months short of 60 years. He is survived by nine children: Ruben Jr. of San Jose, Rosario Rodriguez of Tulare, Raquel Espinoza and Olivia Faz of Fresno, Rosalinda Chavez and Elva Garcia of Salinas, Maria Elena Rodriguez, Ricardo Garcia and Rene Garcia of King City, 25 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and numerous in-laws.

He is preceded in death by his mother Maria De La Luz Garcia and his brother Raul Garcia. His is survived by three sisters: Maria De La Luz Buitron, Esther De Los Santos of Texas, Olivia Luna of Los Angeles; and a brother: Ricardo Garcia of Texas.

A special thank you to those who assisted in caring for him during his illness, Dr. Michael Dicus, Dr. Lane Verlenden, Dr. Zachery Koontz, the King City Dialysis Center and MST Rides Services.

A VISITATION is scheduled for Thursday, April 14, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, 504 N. Third Street in King City. A ROSARY SERVICE will be held 7:00 p.m., April 14, 2016 at St. John’s Catholic Church. A FUNERAL MASS will be held, 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 15, 2016 at St. John’s Catholic Church. BURIAL will take place following the Funeral Mass in King City District Cemetery.
