CUMMINGS – John B. "Jack" and "Gunney," 87, passed away May 14, 2009. Born March 9, 1922, in Coopersdale, son of Patrick and Martha (Benshoff) Cummings. Preceded in death by parents and his wife, Dorothy (Brilhart) Cummings. He is survived by children, Karen, wife of Edward Leck; and John Jr., married to the former Victoria Kauffman, both of Johnstown; Keith, married to the former Sherry Bailey, Bellefonte; and Lisa, married to Edward Tomak of Johnstown; and leaves eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister, Ethel, wife of the late Harry Clawson, Coopersdale; and brothers, Joseph, married to the former Jean Grafenstine, Croydon, Pa.; and Charles, married to the former Dolores Gresik, Coopersdale. During the course of his active life, John worked for two years in the Civilian Conservation Corp., before joining the Army in 1942. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the 1st Armored Division (North Africa) and in other divisions throughout Europe, for which he received both the Silver and Bronze Campaign Stars and a Bronze Star. He also served stateside for two years during the Korean War and was a member of the 876th Engineer Battalion, retiring from active duty with 28 years of service as an SFC E7. A retired employee of the Bethlehem Steel Corp., Rod and Wire Mill Division, and was a longtime member of St. Columba Catholic Church, serving on the parish council and Holy Name Society. As a charter member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, he officiated as Marshall. Also a member of the Catholic War Veterans, Post 954, and life member of a variety of organizations, including NACCCA, NCOA, American Legion Post 551 and VFW Post 155. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Columba Catholic Church, the Franciscan Friars OFM Conv. Interment, Benshoff Hill Cemetery. Friends received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Francis G. Ozog Funeral Home Inc., Broad Street, where the Ancient Order of Hibernians will hold a service at 4 p.m. and the Holy Name Society will recite rosary at 7 p.m.
