Walter Dale Carlson

Walter Dale Carlson of Eugene passed away on April 10th after a long illness with Alzheimer’s. Walter was born June 16th, 1930 in Toledo, Ohio at “The Little Flower Hospital”. The only child of Walter Emil and Irene Sophia (Halquist) Carlson. Walter spent his early childhood living in Toledo and Chicago, Illinois until 1942 when his parents moved to Oregon. Originally stopping in Gearhart, they eventually made their home in Roseburg where Walter graduated from high school in 1950. After graduating, Walter travelled much of the U.S. working at a variety of occupations before returning to attend the University of Oregon where he obtained his teaching degree. An accomplishment he truly and rightly prided himself on. Walter would begin a teaching career that would span 25 years beginning in Powers, Oregon, Myrtle Point, Sweet Home, and eventually Central Linn School District in Halsey for 20 years. One of his greatest joys in later life was running into his past students at reunions, sporting events, or in the general public. He will always be known as the original curator of the ‘You Old Toad’ to his many former students. He enjoyed sport fishing, travelling and almost anything sports. Especially if it had to do with the University of Oregon Ducks. Though he joked about his thirteen wives, his marriages were far less. He is survived by his one true love, companion, and partner of 30 years, Silvanna Forsyth of Eugene; his son, Keith Carlson, stepdaughter, Josephine and her husband, Boyd; and stepson, Charles. He will be interred at Ocean View Memorial Gardens in Coos Bay near the ocean he loved. No services will take place per his request. The family would like to thank the staff at SouthTowne Living Center for their care of Walter for over four years. Any contributions are made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
