James S. Sowers
York
James S. Sowers passed away on his 67th birthday, April 10, 2016, at Country Meadows - Leader Heights after a long and courageous fight with cancer. Jim was the son of Molly Hawn Sowers and the late James F. Sowers.
Jim was a graduate of York Catholic High School (1967) and Seton Hall University (1971) in South Orange, N.J. During his career, Jim worked as a buyer for Ohrbach's in the retail industry in New York and Los Angeles, and also taught courses at the Fashion Institute of Los Angeles before returning to York in 1995.
Jim is also survived by his sisters, Kathleen Guillard and her husband Stephen, Christine McGowan and her husband Brian; niece, Katie Fink, her husband Dan and their children Bennett and Lillet, and niece, Maggie McGowan. Jim was blessed with many friends throughout the country -- in particular, Joan Burns of Chatham, N.J. and Maria Accardo of York, who provided great assistance, support and friendship during his life and extended illness.
Jim's fondest memories were the many times that he spent with his lifelong friends -- those from his high school and college days, his years in New York and California, and those friendships he renewed when he resettled in York. He loved to travel and made certain his unique sense of humor always accompanied him. His passion for life, his wit and his caring nature will be missed by all who knew him.
A visitation with the family will be held at 10:30 a.m., followed by a memorial celebration of Jim's life at 11:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the John Keffer Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2114 W. Market St. in York.
Jim wanted to thank all of his caregivers, particularly the physicians and staff of the Oncology Department of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, who treated him during the past 10 years, and the staffs of Country Meadows - Leader Heights and Heartland Hospice for the exceptional care they provided.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Zero Prostate Cancer at 515 King Street, Suite 420, Alexandria, VA 22314 (www.zerocancer.org); or Heartland Hospice of York, 3417 Concord Road, York, PA 17402.
