Well Known and Popular Citizen Is No More.
DIED SATURDAY EVENING.
Mr. Humbird Suffered Long with a Throat Affection
Which Baffled the Skill of the Best Physicians—
Was Ardent Lover of Horses.
Mr. John J. Humbird. one of the best known men in the western section of the State, died at 7 o'clock on Saturday evening at his home, No. 126 North Mechanic street, age 51 years after a lingering illness. Mr. Humbird was afflicted with a throat affection, which baffled the skill of the most skillful physicians. He spent six months m the City hospital, Baltimore, where a silver tube was placed in his throat, through which he breathed. At that time, over a year ago, his death was expected, but he recovered sufficiently to return home in June last and was able to go driving. The deceased was an ardent lover of horseflesh and also delighted in hunting and fishing. He maintained a splendid lodge on the South Branch of the Potomac, where camping parties in the summer had their outings. He conducted a flour and feed store in Cumberland at one time. Mr. Humbird was a man of jovial disposition and was a favorite with all. He was a son of the late John and Sarah A. Humbird. of this city, and during the later years of his father's life was engaged with him in the business of contracting. He was also a nephew of the late Jacob Humbird, the millionaire contractor, who built railroads in Brazil. He was a first cousin of J. Wilson Humbird. the well known capitalist of Cumberland, and Mr. James S. Humbird, of Pittsburg. Mr. Humbird is survived by his wife who was a Miss Barbara Furlong and one brother, Justice Jacob B. Humbird. and three sisters. Mrs. Lydia H. Hitchcock. Mrs. Susan J. Morris and Mrs Annie N Devries. all of this city. The later is the mother of the wife of George V. Hobart, the well known playwright. of New York, who is a niece of Mr. Humbird. Mr. Humbird spent all of his life in Cumberland. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, who will attend the funeral in a body. He was also a member of Emmanuel Episcopal church. The funeral will take place from the residence tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. William Cleveland Hick,the rector, officiating. Interment will be made in the family lot in Rose Hill cemetery.
