Charles Edward Lavinder died on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 in Lewis Gale Hospital. He was proceeded in death by his parents William Wiley and Anna Simpson Lavinder, four brothers and two sisters. Charles was a fixture on the Roanoke City Market for 35 years selling produce and was known for his best tasting peaches.

At age 20 he enlisted in the Air Force and served in Alaska, Florida, Vietnam and Oregon. He retired after 20 years service and settled in Condon, Oregon. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Metal, National Defense Metal, Longevity Medal, and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.

His hobby was music and he started a band in Oregon called the “Western Gentlemen” playing guitar and banjo.

He returned to his Roanoke home in 1981 to take over the family farm and care for his aging parents and continue the family tradition.

Charles was a member of Back Creek Civic League, the founder of Back Creek Fire and Rescue Squad, and served on the Board of Downtown Roanoke representing the City Market.

He is survived by one sister Fay Lavinder Mullins in Tennessee, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thanks to June Lowe for directing his care and taking care of his special dog, Toby.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2016 at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park with Rev. Nelson Harris officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 17, 2016 from 2:00 until 5 p.m. at Oakey’s South Chapel.
