Dixie Poythress Young, age 90, a resident of 1537 Oakdale Circle, died Saturday, April 09, 2016, in a local nursing home.

Born on June 8, 1925 in Vance County, she was the first born child of the late Ashton Poythress and Verla Jacobs Poythress, and was the granddaughter of the Aviation Pioneer, Tiny Broadwick.

Dixie was a graduate of Middleburg High School and The Henderson Business College. In 1947 she married James Madison Young and they enjoyed 51 years of marriage until he passed away in 1997. Dixie was a valued employee of the former A & P Grocery Store from June 1, 1959 until June 18, 1994. She then became a member of the much bigger A & P Family. She greatly enjoyed her co-workers and made many friends of all her customers. She never met a stranger. Until the last few years, the co-workers would gather each six months to renew their friendship. Even though the company had closed, their love and friendship continued. Dixie was the last surviving charter member of the Hill Cooper Post of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary where she held numerous positions over the years. She was a member of Gillburg United Methodist Church, the Hattie Faulkner Sunday School Class, sang in the choir, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 pm in the J. M. White Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Young Ayscue (Daniel) of Henderson and Tempe Broadwick Young of the home; one son, Ashton Madison Young (Dianne) of Oxford; one sister, Tiny Poythress Culler (Tom); two brothers, E. Dale Poythress (Sarah) and Jerry Poythress (Rachel) all of Middleburg; four grandchildren, Annette Y. King, Rodney Ashton Young, Derek Thomas Ayscue, and Brett Young Ayscue; and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Edna P. Ellington; and one brother, Joseph Carlton Poythress.
