Tom spent his early life in small-town Ohio, son of Douglas Ream Stauffer, a large animal veterinarian, and Twila Magdalene Stauffer (Bennett), a nurse. By his senior year in high school they’d moved to Augusta, ME for his dad’s work at the university. Tom graduated in 1963 then returned to Columbus, OH to attend Capital University and earn his BS. The Vietnam war interrupted his education with a hitch in the USAF in New Mexico. He finally completed his studies at William and Mary VIMS in the 1980s earning his PhD in Oceanography. That was also a part of the work he did in the Environics Div. at Tyndall AFB in the AF Armstrong Lab. It was particularly significant in reduction of hydrocarbon fuel contamination. By 2001 Tom became the Senior Scientist and Deputy Div. Chief of MLQ. During those work years he traveled some as a speaker at NATO conferences, most notably to Great Britain, Europe and Australia. He retired from the lab in 2006 as a GS-15.
Then he bought a summer home in Thompson Falls, MT where he joined the local Trap & Skeet Club. Shooting and reloading filled many hours at his Hideaway Ln home. His new “shop” was part of that plan and provided storage place for his several vehicles, gun reloading and woodworking equipment. Remodeling the old cabin with help from family, friends and local workers provided more room for guests and offered a better view of the adjacent pine forest and meadow visited by numerous turkeys, deer, and even an occasional bear. Tom also spent time playing his guitar for his own amusement. That probably replaced time he might originally have spent riding motorcycles.
Tom was also a very involved member of both Eastside Christian Church in Panama City, FL and of Thompson Falls Christian Church of Thompson Fall, MT, serving as elder and Chairman of the Board at Eastside.
By 2013 his health was failing. Cancer surgery, chemotherapy and other issues interfered with active enjoyment of life. He filled many hours doing crossword puzzles on his iPad keeping his mind clear and agile to the end and still enjoyed teaching new words to his pet parrots, Jabo (34) & Merlin (10).
Tom loved his family and is already missed, especially by his wife of 25 years, Patricia Scott Stauffer. Other surviving family members included: sister, Lisa Morrison and husband, Brian; and his children: Sean Stauffer and wife, Allison, and children, Kennedy & Gage; Andrew Cloninger and wife, Laurie; Sarah DeMorse and husband Greg, and children, Matt & Emily.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, March 26, 2016 at East Side Christian Church with Preacher Jimmy Miller officiating. In honor or Thomas Bennett Stauffer, donations may be made to Eastside Christian Church.
