Walter C. “Dunny” Dunlap, 96, life-long resident of Newburg, departed this life on the morning of Saturday, April 9, 2016, at his home.
He was born on December 24, 1919, in Newburg, a son of the late John and Nanny Rebuck Dunlap. Walter was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, inducted on November 2, 1942. He served in the European/African/Middle Eastern Theaters, participating in the battles of Tunisa, Naples-Foggia, Sicily, and Rome-Arno, and earned Four Campaign Stars, a Distinguished Unit Badge, and a Purple Heart, for wounds received in action on January 29, 1944, in Caserna, Italy. Walter was honorably discharged on June 14, 1945, attaining the rank of Sargent.
Walter was married to Esther Hurley on September 6, 1947, in Hagerstown, MD. For most of his working life, he spent over thirty years employed at the former S.K.F. Industries, Shippensburg, retiring in 1982, as a Burr Hand. Earlier in life he also worked as a carpenter, at the Letterkenny Army Depot, and also drove school bus.
He was a long-time member of the Newburg First Church of God and its men’s bible class. In his free time, Walter liked to hunt coons, lift weights, eating and enjoyed KFC. Spending time with his family was very special to him. Walter was a great inspiration to all and he will be very missed.
Walter is survived by his wife of 68 years, Esther; one son, Roy L. (Susan) Dunlap of Newburg; one daughter, Vonnie M. (Robert) Shockey, Jr. of Newburg; two grandsons, Wesley A. Swartz of Shippensburg and Mark W. Dunlap of Newburg; two step grandsons, Tom and Dan Shockey both of Waynesboro; two granddaughters, Tricia (George) Mandrick of Shippensburg and Kelly (Brooks) Berrier of Shippensburg; one step-granddaughter, Heidi (Mike) Beidle of Fayetteville; fourteen great grandchildren; and one great great grandson.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by two daughters, Bonnie K. Dunlap and Katherine “Toot” Ommert; one great granddaughter, Tammy Swartz; four sisters; and two brothers.
His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. Reverends Kevin Dunlap and William Myers will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Otterbein Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
