Colleen Ethelyn (Bryce) Mitchell was born April 14, 1928 to Collin Sr. and Edna (Young) Bryce. A Columbus native and longtime resident of Lucy Depp subdivision, Powell, Ohio, died Monday at OSU Hospitals East.

Colleen was a graduate of East High School and of The Ohio State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree and completed graduate work in the field of social work.

Her professional career spanned more than four decades and included positions as caseworker for the Franklin County Welfare Department; probation officer with the juvenile division of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas; social worker serving the inmates of Scioto Village; and coordinator for rehabilitative services at the Ohio Reformatory for Women under the auspices of the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission (RSC). She served as equal employment opportunity officer for RSC until her retirement. Her many volunteer activities included terms as a member of the board of Huckleberry House, a shelter and transition program for runaway teenagers.

A lifelong Episcopalian, she was an active and influential parishioner at St. Stephen's Protestant Episcopal Church, where she held numerous positions, including vestry member, junior and senior warden (perhaps the first woman in the Diocese of Southern Ohio to hold a wardenship), delegate to the annual diocesan convention, choir member and organist, and Certified Lay Eucharist Minister. For several years she held the special position of Lay Minister of Programs at St. Stephen's, an honor of which she was especially proud. Also active at the diocesan level, she sat on the Diocesan Council, the Bishop's Standing Committee for the Diocese, the Board of Ecumenical Relations for the national Episcopal Church, and served as Ecumenical Relations Officer for the Diocese. Mrs. Mitchell once served on the search committee to choose a bishop for the Southern District of Ohio and was a member of the Union of Black Episcopalians. She also was a past president of the Ohio Council of Churches and an active member of the Society of the Copanions of the Holy Cross.

Colleen was well-known and active in community affairs in Lucy Depp and once sat on the Concord Delaware County Township Zoning Board. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and once sat on that organization's membership committee. In college, she joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, a membership that remained active through much of her life, highlighted by her tenure as President of Alpha Sigma Omega alumni chapter of AKA and chairperson of numerous of the sorority's community service projects. She was also a life member of the OSU Alumni Association and an avid supporter of the Ohio State Buckeyes football and basketball teams.

Preceded in death by husband, Nathaniel L. Mitchell; parents, Collin and Edna (Young) Bryce; and brother Clement A. Bryce.

Survived by daughter, Lorena (Nelson O.) Simpson; sons, Michael L.N. Mitchell , Sr., Ronald A. (Karen L. Hunt) Mitchell, Sr.,; sister, Mignonne Whitlow; brothers, Colderick Bryce, Collin Bryce , Jr.; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
