Faint hope is expressed for the recovery of Pearl Lombard, farmer, whose automobile was struck by a light New York Central engine at what is known as the Mame Look crossing near Centerville. He is suffering from a severe concussion of the brain, bad scalp lacerations, fracture of the right thigh and compound fracture of the left ankle. It is feared he is also injured internally.
Lombard was on his way to his farm near the Rome state road and evidently did not observe the approaching locomotive until he reached the tracks. His machine was struck broadside, hurled a considerable distance and wrecked. The engine was running from Richland to Pulaski.
He was placed in an ambulance and taken to Ideal Rest hospital at Orwell, seven miles east of Pulaski accompanied by Dr. Alvah G. Dunbar, physician of the Central.
The Mame Look crossing is considered one of the most dangerous along the route in this section of the New York Central lines, because it is not discernable on either side until one is within close proximity of it.
Several fatalities have occurred at this point.
