Jean enrolled in the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corps during World War II, graduating in 1947 from St. Joseph's School of Nursing. She earned her B.S.N. from Creighton University in 1951.

Jean was married to Lyle Joseph Pinkelman in Nebraska, and they had five children.
