John J. Gilley was one of two sons (the other William) of Hays Gilley and Hancy Hall who served and died as a result of the Civil War. According to their youngest brother Thomas, in an interview in 1893, John J Gilley "died in a hospital at Quitman, Mississippi, during the late war, being a member of the Second Texas Infantry... ." John J Gilley's parents came to Texas in 1835 when it was still Mexico. They appear on the Stephen F. Austin Register of Families of 1835. John's family settled first in Brazoria County, then Washington County.
