Lost His Life at The Switch
Freight Conductor James Furlong Instantly Killed
While Shifting Cars, His Foot Caught on the Frog -
He Was Struck by a Truck and Almost Completely
Disembowelled. An Inquest Deemed Unnecessary
Yesterday morning at 8 o'clock Baltimore and Ohio Freight Conductor, James Furlong lost his life while at his post of duty. He was engaged in shifting cars at the Oldtown Crossing and while handling the switch, his foot caught in the frog. In trying to extricate his foot he no doubt slipped and fell on the track, one truck passing over his body, almost completely disembowelling him. He was instantly killed. Undertaker Baxter removed the body to his undertaking establishment where it was prepared for burial and taken to the late home of the deceased on North Mechanic Street where he leaves a wife and one child. He was about 32 years of age and was the son of the late Nicholas Furlong, watchman of the Second National Bank for many years. He leaves two brothers, Messrs, John and Joseph and one sister, Mrs John Humbird. Many were the expressions of regret heard on all sides particularly among railroaders. The train that killed him was drawn by engine 1059 and when the truck struck the unfortunate man, two or three cars were thrown off the track. When he was picked up one shoe was off and it is believed that he had extricated his foot and on doing so fell as stated above. Acting Coroner Charles R Morris viewed the remains and deemed an inquest unnecessary. The funeral for the deceased took place this afternoon at 3 o'clock from St Patrick's church. Interment in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery.
