Janet Horsley Ray of Champaign died Sunday, April 3, 2016, at her home.
Janet Ross Lambie Horsley was born July 9, 1920 in Armadale, Scotland to Robert and Jeanie Horsley. Janet came to America with her family when she was 3 years old, making their home in Detroit, where she attended school and graduated with honors from Northwestern High School. Janet also attended business college.
She married Burton W. Ray on Jan. 18, 1944 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He preceded her in death in 1980.
Survivors include one son, David (Carol); two daughters, Marilee McQueen and Joy (Mike) Mucci; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one brother, Thomas Horsley.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Elmer and Robert Horsley; one sister, Iris Tobiczyk and a son-in-law, William McQueen.
Janet was an assistant librarian at Jefferson Junior High School in Champaign for many years, but will be remembered most for her dedication and years of service in the library at Bottenfield Elementary School in Champaign. Her passion for instilling the love of books in children will be a legacy that will be carried on through all of the children who had the fortune to know her.
She was a longtime member of the Community United Church of Christ, Champaign.
