Dr. Ben A. Byrd, 90, of Hickory, passed away Friday, April 8, 2016 at his home surrounded by family and close friends.

Born March 16, 1926 in Chattanooga, TN, he was the son of the late Ben A. Byrd, Sr. and Minnie Lea Kelley Byrd.

Dr. Byrd was a preacher of the gospel for over 70 years in Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina, where he served the congregation of Gospel Baptist Church in Newton for 34 years. Dr. Byrd's radio ministry spanned 60 years, 45 of which were dedicated to Bread of Life Ministries.

He is survived by his wife, Bethany Carol Chastain Byrd of the home; and a son, Timothy L. Byrd and wife Arsalia of Jupiter, FL.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Gospel Baptist Church on North College Avenue in Newton, NC. Interment will follow in the mausoleum at Catawba Memorial Park.
