Doris Westberry Thornton, 100, of Jesup, Ga., died Saturday, April 9 2016, in Wayne Memorial Hospital and under the care of Hospice of South Georgia, after an extended illness. The Wayne County Ga., native was the eldest member of Calvary Baptist Church, a former Sunday school teacher and choir member. She credits her long life to Christian living and sharing her Godly faith with others. She was a former employee of Pic N’Save Store of Jesup and was a former co-owner of Thornton Grocery. She was the first born of 11 children and enjoyed Cooking, gardening and being with her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Rufus Thornton; sisters, Hazel, Lola, Viola, Evelyn, Valarie; brothers,C.L., Clifford and Vernon.
Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Charles Lee of Jesup,;son and daughter in law; Robert and Shearien Thornton of Savannah, Ga., a sister: Virginia (Jerome) Padgett of N. Augusta, Sc.; brother, Howard Westberry of Caledonia, Ms.; 4 grandchildren, Debbie (Bob) Webster of Lyons, Jan(John) Starling of Jesup, Ga., Bobby (Jenny) Thornton of Richmond Hill, Ga., Karen(John) Wainright of Rincon, Ga., stepchildren; Dennis Lee (Jana) of Mauriceville, Tx., Wanda (John) Clark of Anniston, Al., and Mary Ann Ponville of Jesup, Ga., several great and great great grandchildren and step great and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, April 11,2016, from Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Vann Dempsey and Rev. Stanley Todd officiating. Interment will be in Jesup City Cemetery. Active Pallbearers are Jimmy Miller, Jerry Miller, Brandon Webster, Larry Westberry, John Starling and Bob Webster.
Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Monday, April 11 at the church prior to the service.
