Janice Jean Combs, 63 of Garden City died Monday, November 25, 2013 at her home in Garden City. She was born October 15, 1950 in El Segundo, California.


Janice grew up in Las Angeles, California where she attended school. She later attended Pittsburg State University. Janice moved to Joplin, Missouri in 1974. On October 13, 1976, she married Rev. DeWayne H. Combs in Miami, Oklahoma. They lived in Joplin until 1995 when they moved to Baxter Springs, Kansas. Janice later moved to Garden City in 2010 and has lived in Garden City since. She worked as a Certified Dietician at St. John’s Hospital while living in Joplin and at Maude Norton Hospital while living in Baxter Springs.


Survivors include a son Richard Alan & wife Dawn Combs of Fillmore, Utah; 2 daughters Shawn Combs of California, and Barbara George of Garden City; 3 brothers Tony Blackwood, Mike Blackwood, & Ronnie Blackwood all of California; 12 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. Janice is preceded in death by her husband who died on July 28, 2010. She is also preceded in death by a son SPC Joseph DeWayne Combs and a brother Richard M. Blackwood.


There will be no services, but friends are invited to the home of Barbara George at 1107 N. 5th St. from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29 for a reception and to celebrate Janice’s life. There will be no calling hours. The family requests memorials to the Janice Combs Memorial fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
