Abigail Abbott, dau. of Dea. James Abbott and Sarah Bancroft, b. of record Jan. 22, 1745 at Rumford, in the Province of New Hampshire, now Concord, NH. The date of her recorded birth in the Concord town records is per the pre-1752 period when the English used the Julian calendar and would be represented historically in the modern Gregorian calendar as Jan. 22, 1745/6. Unfortunately, 19th and 20th century writers improperly adjusted the date of her birth to February 2, 1745. Abigail d. Feb. 11, 1815 at Bath, New Hampshire.

On Apr. 15, 1767 of record at Haverhill, NH, Abigail m. Asa Bailey, s. of Edward Bailey and Elizabeth Burbank, b. of record May 13, 1745 at Salem, NH. However, he was actually born in that portion of the west adjoining Town of Windham that in 1750 by boundary agreement was transferred to Salem. Asa is credited with service as a private during the Revolutionary War, and appears in New Hampshire Provincial Records as Second Major of the Landaff town militia.

The Asa Bailey-Abigail Abbott marriage was tumultuous, including incest and attempts at extra-marital affairs with female servants. Seventeen children were born alternately at Haverhill, Bath and Landaff, NH from 1768 to 1791. Abigail finally obtained a divorce in 1793. When and where Asa died is unknown. One account claims Asa remarried, became a large landowner with an additional five children, and died circa 1820 either in Erie County, Penn. or circa 1825 in the state of New York. In 1800 Asa Bailey was 55 years old. An Asa Bailey (age greater than 44) with an apparent wife (greater than age 44) is enumerated in the 1800 census and again in the 1810 census of Erie County, Penn., but in neither case is there more than two enumerated members of the household. If Asa was a large landowner with five additional children, the Erie County, Penn. censuses do not bear out this claim. Another writing claims Asa remarried but died insolvent and destitute. No other Asa Bailey enumerated in western New York or western Penn. from 1800 to 1820 exceeds 44 years of age.

Abigail's personal memoirs were published in 1815 soon after her death and reprinted in 1989 by Ann Taves under the title of "Religion and Domestic Violence in Early New England. The Memoirs of Abigail Abbot Bailey." Although all of Asa and Abigail's 17 children are listed in the 1919 pub. History of Haverhill, New Hampshire (p. 472-3), some of the dates therein do not match the individual town records. And the 17th child is called Putnam, when he was a she named Patience, specifically named by Abigail in conjunction with the family events then in-play. The 17 children were: Abigail, Ruth, Samuel, Phebe, Sarah (d.y.), Asa, twins Anna and Caleb, Sarah, Jabez, Chloe, Amos, Olive, Phinehas, twins Judith and Simeon, and Patience.

It is assumed Abigail was interred without headstone at the Bath village cemetery, where numerous of her children and sons-in-law are interred and who died about the same time as Abigail's own death.

The present focus of this memorial is with several of the children, while a summary of the others will be added when descendant research is completed:
