Joseph Ward, 52-year-old rural Sherman resident, is believed to have shot himself to death at his home shortly before 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 1964.
Ward, who lived on the Sherman Blacktop about 1 1/4 miles east of Sherman, was a Clear Lake Sand & Gravel Co. truck driver.
He is survived by his widow, Helen; three daughters, Mrs. Delores Smith, Mrs. Etta Mae Green and Mrs. Joann Mitchell of Springfield; five sons, Charles Ward, of El Paso, Tex.; John, Kenneth, Robert and Richard Ward of Sherman; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ward of Shobonier; four brothers, Lloyd of Greenville; Charles of Shobonier; Paul of Niantic and Jerome of Vandalia; three sisters, Mrs. Tillie McIntosh of Greenville; Mrs. Lucinda Laughlin of Shobonier and Mrs. Nina Smith of Gillespie; 18 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Services were at the Mott and Son Funeral Home, Athens.
Burial was in Roselawn Cemetery.

Helen Marie Ward-Hill, 91, a resident of Springfield since 2008, formerly of Live Oak, FL, Vandalia and Sherman, died at 11:55 a.m. Monday, March 15, 2010, at Auburn Nursing and Rehab.
Her obituary indicates she was buried in McInturff Cemetery in Mulberry Grove, Illinois.
