Bruce Winfield Smith Sr. Army veteran and pipefitter, known as 'Mr. Fix-it'

Bruce Winfield Smith Sr., 86, of Elmer, N.J., passed away Saturday night, April 2, 2016.

Born in Bybee, Tenn., to the late Abraham "Link" and Ethie C. (nee Brown) Smith, Bruce moved to South Jersey when he was four years old and resided in Hopewell, N.J., Shiloh, N.J., and Palatine, N.J., before settling down in Elmer in 1967.

He served his country in the United States Army after World War II as a military police officer guarding supplies on the trains in Italy and Germany. Bruce worked at Kimble Glass in Vineland, N.J., as a pipefitter for 45 years and he was known as "Mr. Fix-it" as he served as handyman for the family motels. He was a New York Giants fan, he loved telling jokes, and he used to be manager for Elmer Little League's Rotary Team. But he truly cherished his date nights on Fridays with his girl, Margaret, at the Point 40 Diner. He will be forever remembered as a loving husband, father, and a very special Poppop and Great-Poppop.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Margaret (nee Griner) Smith; his two sons, Bruce W. Smith Jr. and his wife, Arlene, and Jeffrey W. Smith and his wife, Tracy; his grandchildren, Sheri Lynn Corey and her husband, Ken, Stacy Lynn Smith, Jenna Marie Smith, Adriene Hitchner and Mark Steward; his great-grandchildren, Elyse, Kenneth Bruce and Camryn Corey and Baby Corey number four on the way, as well as Ave and Aziya Bartosic; his former daughter-in-law, Cora Lee Harrell-Smith; and his South Jersey Street Rod Assn. and other car club friends. He was predeceased by his parents; his grandson, Bruce W. Smith III; his siblings, Harley, Burnett (Mac), James A. (Jim), Joe and Lee Odas Smith, Lola Burgess and Nancy Call; and an infant daughter.

Services will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Adams Funeral Home, 64 Broad St., Woodstown, N.J. 08098 with a visitation from 10 a.m. to 12 noon followed by the service at 12 noon. Interment will be at the Centerton Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Pittsgrove, N.J.
