DOVER-FOXCROFT – Alfred Eugene Robinson, 96, passed away April 16, 2005, in Dover-Foxcroft. He was born Sept. 15, 1908, in Bangor, the son of Veda D. and Katie (Dysart) Robinson.
He dropped out of school at age 15, following the death of his father, to help his mother raise his four siblings. He did odd jobs, working for Dysarts, Allie Cole, and then in 1930, got his first steady job working for Standard Oil in Bangor, where he worked for 20 years.
In 1950, he and his wife Elinor moved to Dover-Foxcroft and founded a local Mobil distributorship, which later became known as A.E. Robinson Oil Co., Inc.
He was active in the community, serving as a selectman, and as a member and past president of the Piscataquis Valley Fair Association, a member of the Dover-Foxcroft Housing Development, Bangor Savings Bank Corporation, Odd Fellows, Masons, receiving his 50 year pin in 2004, Anah Temple Shrine, Maine Oil Dealers Association, and was a past Lt. Governor of Kiwanis Club, New England District.
He retired in 1974, and continued to operate his gravel business during the summer, and spending winters in Florida. A good day for Al was hauling loam in his 1969 Ford dump truck. Al had great pride in his rock free loam.
He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Elinor, in 1992; his brother, William; three sisters, Mildred Robinson, Elva Oxley, and Golda Libby; and a son-in-law, James Conley.
He is survived by two daughters, Rosalie and her husband, Maynard Hammond of Dover-Foxcroft, and Joan Conley of Elbridge, N.Y.; three sons, William Robinson and his wife, Virginia, Alfred Robinson and his wife, Roberta, and James Robinson and his wife, Peggy, all of Dover-Foxcroft; 17 grand-children, 12 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Raymond Libby of Bangor; two sisters-in-law, Marguerite Robinson of Herman and Rachel Ellis of Bangor.
Alfred remarried in 1996 and is survived by his wife, Fern Snowden Robinson and her family.
Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, where funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2005, with Al’s grandson, the Rev. Michael J. Conley officiating. Following the service, friends are invited to Harter Hall at the United Methodist Church in Dover-Foxcroft for a time of refreshment and remembrance.
