Jacob “Jay” L. Richardson died peacefully at Kline Hospice House in Mt. Airy, MD on Tuesday, April 5 after a long illness. He was 48. With Jay was his loving wife of 22 years, Cheryl and their two children Kayla Ann and Kyle Jacob all of New Market. He is also survived by his father, Jake Richardson of Dundalk, MD; his sister, Melissa Nocera of Perry Hall, MD; his nephew, Josh Nocera, wife Emily and their daughter Madeleine “Maddie”; and his nephew, Tim Nocera and fiancée Cearra Mechem. In addition, he is survived by his extended family including his aunts, uncles and numerous cousins. Jay’s mother Beatrice M. Richardson predeceased him.
Jay was born and raised in Baltimore County where he was a star athlete. He began his pitching career in little league and later pitched for his high school team. He was Athlete of the Year when he graduated from Dundalk High School in 1985. While recruited by both the US Naval Academy and several colleges for his baseball talents, he ultimately chose to attend University of Maryland Baltimore County where he was a walk on star. He graduated in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in Geography and later University of MD, College Park with a graduate degree in Urban Planning. After a stint in the private sector he took a job with the federal government.
Jay was always a family man with many happy memories of time spent with his parents, sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. He regularly attended family reunions. He met the love of his life, Cheryl (nee McCullough) on the beach in Ocean City. Jay was happiest spending time with his family at their beach house in Delaware or on the many family trips to Disney World. He was an avid sports fan and was a life-long follower of his beloved Baltimore Orioles and later the Baltimore Ravens. Jay had a wicked sense of humor and a mischievous grin coupled with a sensitive and giving nature and a huge heart. Even during his illness he was more concerned with others than himself.
Jay’s family extends their gratitude to the doctors and nurses of Frederick Memorial Hospital, University of Maryland Medical Center, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Georgetown University Hospital and Kline Hospice House for their exceptional care and kindness.
The family will be accepting visitors at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville Blvd., Mt. Airy on Sunday April 10 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St Peter’s Catholic Church, 9190 Church Street in Libertytown, on Monday April 11 at 11am. Interment will be at Resthaven Cemetery immediately following the mass.
