William Charles Wise, 93, of New Kensington, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006, in Family Hospice Manor, Bellevue.

He was born in East Deer Township on Oct. 11, 1912, and had lived in New Kensington since 1937.

He had previously resided in Glassmere and Harmar Township.

He was the operator of Wise Greenhouse and Nursery in New Kensington for over 65 years, retiring in 2004 at the age of 90.

He thoroughly enjoyed and loved his nursery career.

He also worked for Alcoa in New Kensington, retiring with 36 years of service.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Wise was of the Lutheran faith and a member of Tyrian Lodge of the F&AM and several sportsmen and fraternal organizations.

He was extremely active in sports and was the sponsor of Wise All Stars, a Springdale softball team for which he played.

He played baseball for the Glassmere Aces, a semi-pro team, and basketball.

He was especially proud of the fact that he had personally met a number of sports notables such as: Jack Dempsey, Mickey Mantle, Pie Trainor, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb and others.

Survivors include four sons, William A. (Helen) and Jeffrey J. Wise, all of Greensburg, Noel J. Wise, of Sommerdale, N.J., and a fourth son; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene H. Bowser, of Newton Falls, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen W. Zaydel Wise; a son, Cornell E. Wise; and two brothers, Elmer E. and James C. Wise.

Friends will be received after 7 p.m. Thursday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the RUSIEWICZ OF LOWER BURRELL FUNERAL HOME, 3124 Leechburg Road at Alder Street. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Kensington, by the Rev. Alfred Petrill. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Lower Burrell. Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
