Roberta Burton, 92, of Milton, was called home to rest Friday, April 1, 2016. She departed this life at Country Rest Nursing Home in Greenwood. Roberta was born Sept. 4, 1923, in Milton to Lena Burton.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her brother, Herman Burton; and a sister, Frances Burton Piper of Milton. Roberta attended school in Georgetown, where she received her education.

At the age of 10 years old, she gave her life to the Lord and became a devoted member of Bethel A.M.E. Church. Roberta received her license as a local preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1967, where she trained under her cousin, Mrs. Molly Jackson, a local deacon.

She served in many organizations within her church, ranging from Y.P.D. director for five years, Senior Choir member, Usher Board, and president of the ACE League. She also served as a faithful member of the Lay Organization and the Molly Jackson Missionary Society.

Mrs. Burton retired from Draper King Cole Canning Company in Milton after working many, many years.

Roberta was a humble servant and truly a vessel ready to be used by God. For all of her life she has been known as a sweet, loving and caring person no matter what obstacles she encountered. Whenever Roberta would meet an unfamiliar face she would greet them with a warm smile and a kind word. To know her was to love her.

Many people around Milton knew Roberta as the short little lady who walked throughout town. She was known to quote her favorite scriptures: John 14:1-4, Psalm 23 and Psalm 100. She loved the Lord and she loved to sing praises unto her God.

She leaves to cherish her memories a niece; five nephews; a host of great-nieces and -nephews; cousins and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 9, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 329 Mulberry St., Milton, where friends and family may call for a time of visitation from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Interment will be at First Congregational Cemetery, Milton.
