Professional Hockey Player and Coach. He played collegiate hockey at the University of Michigan where he was a college All-American and two seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was the former college head coach at the University of Illinois, the University of Michigan and the Air Force Academy. He coached at the University of Michigan for 13 seasons and led the Wolverines to six NCAA national titles in 1948, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955 and 1956. He was named the National Collegiate Coach of the Year in 1953 and the head coach of the U.S. National Hockey Team in 1966. He retired from coaching following the 1973-74 season. He was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 1974 and the Michigan Hall of Fame in 1980. He died at his home from undisclosed causes at the age of 87.
