William "Willie" Lee Bates fathered 20 children, 9 by his first wife Maudie and 11 by his second wife Tabitha. Of the 20 children 3 died at an early age, 1 died at birth, 1 died about 2 weeks after birth and another died at about age 4. Seventeen of Willies children lived to reach adulthood and raise their own families.
