Musician. Best known as a founding member of the music ensemble "Dion and the Belmonts". He succeeded Dion as lead vocalist after he embarked on a solo career in 1960. Raised in The Bronx, he attended Roosevelt High School with Dion DiMucci and Fred Milano. Influenced by the doo-wop genre of the 1950s, they formed the ensemble 'The Belmonts' and landed a record deal with the Mohawk label in 1957. Mastrangelo's reputation as a fine drummer impressed Buddy Holly who asked him to sit in on tours. However, he declined. Their debut album "Presenting Dion and the Belmonts" (1958) featured their number five hit "A Teenager in Love" (1959) and the number three charted "Where or When" (1960). Following Dion's departure in 1960, he took over duties as lead vocalist and with the new lineup, they achieved a Top-20 hit with "Tell Me Why" (1961 and a Top-30 single with "Come On Little Angel" (1962). Mastrangelo moved on to launch a solo career in 1962 and by the end of the decade, he formed the psychedelic band "Pulse". They recorded the album "Pulse Featuring Carlo Mastrangelo" (1971), on which he wrote most of the material in addition to playing numerous instruments including the drums. He continued to perform and often paired with Dion in later years. Mastrangelo was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000 as part of 'Dion and The Belmonts'.
