ANTHES, Doris M. - 1914-2008. Doris Mary Anthes, formerly of Royal Court, Riverview, N.B., passed away in K.E. Spencer Memorial Home on Monday, June 23, 2008, at the age of 94. Born in Chatham, N.B., she was the eldest daughter of the late Noonan and Theresa (Holt) Maher. Doris received her early education at St. Michael's Academy in Chatham. Upon graduation she went to Montreal where she obtained her Registered Nursing degree from Royal Victoria Hospital in 1936. She remained in Montreal practising at the Royal Victoria and doing private duty nursing at both the Royal Victoria and the Jewish General Hospital until her husband's transfer to Halifax in 1942 where they resided until 1977. At this time they moved to Moncton. During her retirement, Doris and Len fully enjoyed their summers with family and friends at their cottage at The Bluff in Shediac, N.B., and several winters in West Palm Beach, Fla. We, as family, heard many stories of the wonderful retirement years they had together. Ten years prior to official retirement, Doris and her team organized the Association of Physicians Services of Nova Scotia at the Victoria General Hospital. Doris was also a great supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society and spent many years volunteering in the role of canvasser, canvass organizer and held the position of First Vice-President of the Halifax Unit. Doris always put her family first and made a career of kind deeds. She loved a good party and a good joke. She defined "good nature". She will be lovingly remembered always by sons, Len and his wife Jeanette, Font Hill, Ont.; Noonan and his wife, Fay, Riverview, N.B., Tom and his wife, Anne, Halifax; daughter, Barbara Milligan, Port George; cherished grandchildren, Debbie Timmers (Frank), Leonard Anthes (Chris), Terri Poirier (Jon), Heather Anthes (Kirk Crowder), Niki Power (Bill), Marcus Anthes (Fiona), Karen Cole (David), Jennifer Milligan, and 10 very special great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear sister, Irene (Snookie) Gorman of Miramichi; sister-in-law, Margaret Maher, Edmonton, Alta., and many loved nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leonard J. Anthes, in 1988; brothers, Frank and Holt; son-in-law, Vernon Milligan. Following cremation, the family will be receiving family and friends in Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Rd., Moncton, N.B. (506-858-1995), on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Parish Prayers and sharing of memories 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Funeral mass and celebration of Doris' life will be held in Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, 11 Cavendish St., Moncton, on Friday, June 27, at 10 a.m. with Father Phil Mulligan officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Interment in St. Michael's Cemetery, Miramichi, N.B.
