He was born September 1, 1927 in Springfield, Missouri, the son of the late John C. and Wilmetta (Pitchford) Lee. He was united in marriage on September 3, 1950 to Venda M. Pursley. He was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Barbara Ann Lee.
Gene was raised in Cedar Gap and attended Seymour High School where he was a basketball star and earned his nickname "Lefty". He was a US Army veteran serving one year in Japan as a manager of the hospital food service. He worked for Consumer Markets for 20 years and IGA for 2 years before owning and operating Lee's Grocery in Turners Station for 25 years. He was a member of Schweitzer United Methodist where he was a volunteer with the Food Pantry; a 61 year member of Henderson Masonic Lodge No. 477; Abou Ben Adhem Shriners, Lions Club and Elks Lodge No. 409. His passions were his family, the food pantry, and spending time on his farm and taking care of his cattle.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Venda; two sons, Gerry Lee and wife Lynne; and Mike Lee and wife Jennifer; a daughter, Grace Ann Rowden and husband Rick; seven grandchildren, Greg, Christie, and Abby Lee; Patrick and Andrew Lee; Melissa and Curtis Rowden; three sisters, Wilma Wilkerson, Mary Lee and Sharon Miller.
Burial, with military honors in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield.
