J. A. Gardner, after a lingering illness, died at his home on west 4th street on January 4, 1898, aged 61 years and 27 days. Mr. Gardner had been a great sufferer from cancer for a number of years. The deceased was a native of Trumbull county, Ohio and moved to Kansas in 1878. In March, 1894, he moved to this county with his family where with his noble, Christian character he gained a multitude of friends. He was a member of the G.A.R. and I.O.O.F. He leaves a devoted wife, one son and one daughter to mourn their great loss. Funeral services took place from the family residence and remains were taken to their final resting place in Elmwood cemetery.
