Born and spent the early years of her life in Mielnica, a locale in the Galicia province of the then Austrian Empire. Today, the most commonly accepted association for that place name is with Mel'nytsya-Podil's'ka, Ternopil'ska, Ukraine (48.606110, 26.164498).

In about June of 1899, she came to Canada with her parents and two of her younger brothers who were also born in Galicia. Her family spent some of the years of her youth on the family homestead (NE-2-17-3-E1 or in modern coordinates: 50.43294,-97.07054) and some time living in the town of Winnipeg Beach.

After a short time farming a property near Louis' parents' homestead (assumed to be a part of section 34-18-2-E1, as noted in the 1921 census; 50.588052, -97.240936), the remainder of her early married life was lived on the Russin family homestead, raising her children there and helping with the family of her younger brother Peter, whose own interests lay in commerce and helping his older brother John with tending to the affairs of the town and the Post Office duties.

By the 1940's the couple had moved their family into town, where Louis had also taken up the life of a merchant in Winnipeg Beach.
