page 121
BARLOW, Dennis, after a short Illness of five days, of la grippe, died in this city of Tuesday last in the 78th year of his age. Mr. Barlow was, perhaps, one of the oldest resident citizens of Arkadelphia, having lived here for more than half a century. He leaves a widowed daughter, who lives in Louisiana. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday morning, conducted by Rev. H. H. Watson, and the remains interred in Rose Hill cemetery beside his first wife, who preceded him many years ago. (1-29-1897 p3c3)

...
We deeply regret to see so little attention and respect paid by our citizens the departed dead in attending their funeral. For instance, on Wednesday, when one of our oldest and most highly respect citizens was laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery, not more than a dozen persons were present to do honor to him, and themselves, by attending his funeral. This is un-christianlike, and should not be. (1-29-1897 p3c5)
