Henry was a Sgt. in Company F of the 18th Kentucky Infantry (Union) during the Civil War. He was wounded twice during the war. The first time at the battle of Richmond, Kentucky 30 August 1862 and the 2nd time more seriously at the battle of Chickamauga 19 September 1863. He was sent to a Union Hospital in Louisville, KY and eventually discharged from the Army on 8 February 1865. Henry filed for a disability pension in 1878 and in the 1890 Veteran's census he was listed as being slightly deaf in one ear, having a defective right arm and suffering from hemorrhaging lungs due to measles.

His tombstone is still standing but is nearly unreadable. Neither stone for his first or second wife was located but there is space nearby where stones appear to be missing. The marker for his granddaughter Lena Ramsey is near his still.
