Gerald Bob "Jerry" Bates, STCM-SS, USN, Retired, 77 of Pearland, passed away December 31, 2015. He was born October 30, 1938 in Houston, Texas to Frank and Bernice Bates, and grew up in LaPorte, Texas, where he was an Eagle Scout. Jerry joined the U. S. Navy after graduation from high school, went to boot camp for nine weeks, and came home on leave to marry Jennie Gerber. They were married on August 16, 1956 when Jerry was 17 and Jennie was 18, and recently celebrated 59 years of marriage.
Jerry served 30 years in the Navy being stationed on six different submarines. When he retired, he worked at Helton Boat Works and Whitt Marine. He then worked with Helping Hands Ministry of Sagemont Church where he and Jennie have been members for over 20 years.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and son Gerald Lee. He is survived by his wife, Jennie, children Glenn Edward, Tracy Lynette and adopted daughter Debbie, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and sister, Renae Snow.
The service honoring Jerry's life will be held at 11:00am Thursday, January 7, 2016, at Niday Funeral Home.
