Valerie Lisa Ray, 58, of Athens, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Starr Regional Medical Center of Athens.

A native of Groveland, Mass., and a current resident of Athens for the past 30 years, she was a daughter of the late George and Joan Edwards Zanni.

She was a 1975 graduate of Pentucket High School in West Newberry, Mass. Valerie enjoyed playing Bingo with her mother, billiards and 45's, a local card game to Merrimack Valley, along with many other card games. Valerie loved to travel when she was able to, even if it was a road trip to the mountains or beach. Known for her thoughtful heart, she was always willing to help a friend when needed. Valerie will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Franklin Ray, whom she would have been married to for 20 years on April 27, 2016; her two sons, Eric Kizirian of Dover, N.H., and Brent Scarafone and girlfriend, Alaina Romeo, of Daly City, Calif.; five brothers, George Zanni of Raymond, N.H., Tom Edwards and wife, Leslie, of Chester, N.H., Keith Edwards of Seabrook, N.H., Neil A. Zanni, and Matthew D. Zanni; one sister, Ellen E. Zanni; one brother and sister-in-law, Sharon and R.H. Lovin of Charleston; one grandson, Declan Kizirian; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service in memory of Valerie will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
