James was declared "Missing In Action" on the U.S.S. Indianapolis when it was sunk by enemy action between Leyte and Guam during the war.

He had served in the Navy for one year and five months at the time of his death and was decorated with a Purple Heart.

James also has a "Cenotaph" in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Philippines.
