He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1857 and became a medical doctor. He served as a physician on a Liverpool packet ship, and then practiced for a year in Waukegan, Illinois. In 1863, he joined the 8th Vermont Volunteer Infantry for the Civil War, and he served as a Surgeon until resigning in 1864 because of ill health; his military career included the Red River Campaign
in Louisiana. He practiced medicine briefly in Barre before relocating to Ticonderoga, where he resided for the rest of his life. He practiced medicine until 1907, after which he lived in retirement; his death occurred as the result of rapidly declining health caused when he fell and broke his hip.
