Henry L. Nordhaus, head of the firm of H. Nordhaus & Sons Co., died at 7:10 p. m. Sunday at his residence on Spruce street. The cause of his death was pulmonary odoema.
Mr. Nordhaus has not been in good health for some time past, but no one expected the end to come as suddenly as it did. He was taken ill Saturday forenoon and died in thirty-six hours. Member of the immediate family were at the bedside when he passed away. Mr. Nordhaus had just passed his 56th year. He was born in New Orleans, La. When he first came to Deming in 1887, he was engaged in the manufacture of saddles and harness. A few years later he founded the clothing and dry goods house with his two sons, and devoted his entire attention to building up a business that compares favorably with any in the southwest. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Frank L. and Morris A. and a daughter, Mrs. Hallie N. Tucker, all being residents of this city; three brothers, Jefferson, Eugene and George, all being prominent newspaper men; two sisters, Florine Morris, of Galveston, and Clotilda Deussen, of San Antonio and his mother, Hannah H. The burial services were held at the family residence Wednesday afternoon, Revs. Foulks and Bruce of the Methodist church officiating.
By the passing away of Mr. Nordhaus Deming loses one of its oldest and most influential citizens. The services held at the residence were attended to the capacity of the house, the general procession being one of the largest ever witnessed in Deming's history. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the relatives in their hour of bereavement.
