Community Pays Respects to Eli L. Bachelor

Funeral services for Eli Lunt Batchelor, 64, who died Saturday in a Salt Lake hospital of a heart ailment, were held Tuesday in the Fifth ward chapel, with Bishop E. B. Garrett conducting.

Mr. Batchelor was born March 1, 1880, a son of Eli and Elizabeth Lunt Batchelor, who were among the early settlers of Juab county. HIs parents crossed the plains with the Israel Evans handcart company in 1857.

His father died when he was 8 years old, and he and his older brother helped their widowed mother support her family of seven small children. When he was 12 he contracted rheumatic fever as a result of becoming drenched in a rainstorm while watering sheep. This later developed into the heart ailment which was the immediate cause of death.

He married Nell Dora Norton of Nephi in 1897, later being sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. To this union were born ten children, seven of whom are still living.

In his early life he was a member of the state militia and was in active duty when the Schofield mine was blown up by agitators. Shortly after the Schofield disaster, he moved with his family to Lehi, where he engaged in the barbering business. His wife died in 1919, leaving him a family of small children.

In 1922 he was married to Emma Woodhouse, daughter of John Woodhouse, Lehi pioneer. Until two years ago he had continued his barbering business in Lehi, moving to Murray at that time. He was stricken with an illness which had kept him bedfast for the past 18 months.

He is survived by his widow, five sons, John Shirley, and Lyle June of Salt Lake City, Eli Vanile of Waterloo, Iowa, Gilbert Norton of American Fork, and Mack DeMar of Portland, Oregon; two daughters, Mrs. Charles H. Olsen and Maxine Batchelor of Salt Lake City; four brothers, Charles of Boise, Idaho; George and W. L. of Salt Lake City; and Roy L. of Provo, 17 grandchildren, two of whom are in the armed services, and one great-grandchild.

The body was laid to rest in the Vine Bluff cemetery at Nephi, the grave being dedicated by Bishop Garrett.
