Edwin Stewart was a member of the NY State Assembly, representing Tompkins County, in 1894-1895. He obtained significant State appropriations for improvements of the Cayuga Inlet.
He was a member of the NY State Senate (40th District) from 1896-1898, and again from 1901-1904. Stewart was the author of the legislative bills which established at Cornell University the State Colleges of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, and Forestry.
From 1920, until his death in 1921, Edwin Stewart was Mayor of Ithaca, NY. As Mayor, he developed plans to improve Ithaca's lakeside park, then called "Renwick Park", and purchase additional acreage there to enlarge it, appropriating $150,000 for the project.
Ithaca's Stewart Park is named in his honor.
