Basil, son of Pierre Gouthro and Agnes LeBlanc, was born at Cobequid (now Truro) in 1741, according to Bona Arsenault, and died October 4, 1821 at the age of 84. About 1750-51, Pierre Gouthro sailed with his family to Anse Pinette, Ile-St-Jean (PEI). When the British took Louisbourg in 1758, they decided to expel the Acadians from PEI. Pierre sailed to Miramichi. In the summer of 1760, the family was at Restigouche. In 1761, in the Battle of Restigouche, Basil was taken prisoner and imprisoned at Ft. Edward. He was later sent to Halifax, and after the peace treaty, Basil remained in Halifax. On 23 Nov 1770, he married Marie Girroir (Girouard). After the war, Pierre and the rest of the family made their way to Chedabouctou (now Guysborough), where a few Acadian families had set up a temporary settlement. On 26 Oct 1787, Basil obtained a 200 acre lot on the western side of the Tracadie River.
