Abram was born to immigrants to Canada that came from New Jersey in the U.S. when they were children. The family consisted of "loyalists" who settled in the early 1700s in Morris County, New Jersey. At the time, New Jersey was part of British Colonial America. 20 years after the revolution ended, and it was clear that the United States was determined to remain independent, the Van Sickle family and associated families packed up and moved en masse to rural Wentworth County in Ontario - in what is Ancaster Township. Abram spent his entire life in the rural area in Ancaster Township, Ontario. He married Susan Fonger in 1873, having 3 children with her. Susan died young in 1883. Abram remarried to Esha Billiald in 1886.
