Jacob (J.D.) Matthews of Wedgefield Lane died Sunday, March 21st, in his sleep at a local hospital after a long illness. Mr. Matthews was retired from the grocery business in Atlanta, where he owned Matthews Super Markets for 35 years. He was a member & past president of the Georgia Retail Food Dealers Association and served as retail representative on the Georgia Milk Commission. He was a member & steward of Peachtree Road Methodist Church. J.D. was a charter member & past president of the Buckhead Rotary Club & a former member of the Capital City Club, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force in World War II. He later lived in Madison & was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Athens Country Club. Survivors include his wife, Birdie Jetton Matthews; son, Robert W. Matthews of Richardson, TX; daughter, Nancy Pettee McGee of Athens; son-in-law, Jim McGee; daughter-in-law, Ruthie Matthews; grandsons: Jake & John Pettee; granddaughters: Ashley & Amanda Matthews; a sister, Roberta Dilworth of San Antonia; sister-in-law, Opal Matthews of Marietta; & several nieces & nephews.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 25, in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Kerr officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 350, Madison, GA 30650 or to the Plano Bible Chapel, 1900 Shiloh Road, Plano, TX 75074. Pallbearers will be Carroll DeVore, Cecil Johnson, Claude Williams, Adrian McManus, Lamar Lewis, Jake Pettee & John Pettee.
