Mary was married to the late Joseph Jones, Jr. Nov. 24 1825. From that time to Sept. 1, 1857 they lived in their native country. At the later date they removed to Potter Co., PA. They lived there 18 years and then removed to Caldwell County, MO. where they have since resided. The husband died June 3, 1885. There were born to them 11 children, of whom but four are now living. Two of these, a son and daughter, the others reside one in Wis. and one in PA. Since the death of father Jones 5 years ago, two of the six children then living had died. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren of this aged lady residing in this community are numerous, and for the most part at least are an honor to the maternal influence which they have so long felt. May it not be less in it Christian vigor now that it is a memory in their hearts and the kindly, active form of the mother whom nature so richly endowed is no longer seen by them. Mother Jones possessed a vigorous memory. Her life cast in the shining period of our national history. At the time of her birth Thomas Jefferson was president; the Methodist Episcopal church, to which she has belonged ever since her young days, was 20 years of age.
She has been an interested observer of events in both church and state, and her life time covered the period of their growth to present conditions. She, as every other mother who has lived in the times of our peril, has felt the shock and known the cost of war. Her residence in Maine then in PA and later in MO, when this state was undeveloped had much to do with developing in her that heroic type of nature characteristic of our older generations, the builders of commonwealths and nations. from the meditative vigorous cast of her mind one would have known she belonged to the older period of our history. When, with her family, she came to this community she was 64 years of age; she has seen it grow to what it is. She was a Christian that too of the positive type. Though, at so great an age she was conscious to the last of life. Calling to her son and taking his hand in hers, she alluded to the pain of her dying, and as the intense pain continued she was heard to say, "Lord Jesus, come quickly." So ended the life of this aged hand maiden, and she passed into the country where there are perennial youth and unbroken reunions. She has bequeathed much; she has gone on to posses much.
