Death Followed Operation

Last Thursday afternoon Dr. Grothan of Kearney operated on Mrs. Carl Hackel for gallstones and the Saturday morning following she died from the shock, her condition being too weak to stand the ordeal.
Becca [sic] Smith [sic] was born in Germany on Jan. 29, 1841 [sic]. She was married to Carl Hackel in her native land and soon after the marriage came to America, first living in Michigan, then in Omaha and finally coming to Valley county 27 years ago. They located in Mira Valley and by industry and frugality became prosperous and well-to-do.
Ten children were born to them, nine of whom are still living.
Mrs. Hackel was a woman of high mental and moral qualities, a good wife and mother, holding the love of her children and winning the esteem of her neighbors.
Her unexpected death was a shock to the community and deep sympathy was expressed by a great concourse of friends in coming to the funeral, which was held Monday, the deceased being buried near the Evangelical church of which she was a member.
